Q: Do you think art can break down barriers between cultures?
A: Yes, but sometimes no. A war-torn society may not have the time to appreciate Art when it is important to live or help others to survive. By Yes, I mean, Art can show one race/culture/society the beauty/intellegence of another. This may not be a great example, but take “Bollywood”. Late 20th century it wasn’t globally known. But now, with the help of movies such as Slumdog Millionaire, as well as past movies from earlier this millennium, actors and actresses from India are becoming well known for America and around the globe.

Q: Do various cultures around the world share a concept of art?
A: Yes, I believe so, no matter how primitative they might be. Take cave men for example. They had art in their caves and as the millions of years progressed there still cultures out there that use odd jewelrys and body modifications to express their beliefs and what they like. Example, big-ass nose rings, neck extensions, tribal wears….

Q: Can artists reference cultures in their artwork that they have never experienced?
A: Sure, especially in America. You can paint whatever the hell you want and still argue it as Art. But, if you do, you run the risk of being someone viewed as a fake because you have never exprienced the culture you are painting. Example, a rich white guy who never experience the “hood” except on TV/Media and paints/creates art of what he/she believes is the norm for those people who do live is said places.

Q: Should art be only self referential? What may be some problems and benefits of that?
A: No, but only if YOU want to. Again, this is America. Some problems could be that you might be labeled as single minded by doing art relating only to yourself and not of other events, people, culture, etc.. But, a benefit could be that you will be known as an “expert” in the art you make from your self referential. And those who need help creating what they need from your field will come to you and that could mean big money or fame. If thats what you want.

Q: Does feminist art have any distinct styles?
Q:What issues do fem artists address?
A: Maybe a woman should answer these question. I don’t want to step on anybody’s toes.

Q: Is grafitti art?
A: Yes, when it is done right. Any idiot can take a spray can and paint shit, but when the grafitti artist takes his time and puts the effort to show his style of art work on a wall, that may or may not be legal depending on the area or if he/she has a permit to do so, then THAT is ART.

Hope these answers help. I don’t know if you can view my email, but if you have any question to what I wrote, I do have a lot of free time during my working hours. It is a slow period.

Thanks

  1. I don’t think that art can break down barriers between cultures. Barriers between cultures tend to be focused on differences in their norms and values and to do with history – eg colonial past etc and although art may begin to form some common ground, it tends to be common ground between cultures that already mix – such as US and UK

I think that various cultures do share some concept of art, but that of a more denoting representative one such as “wow thats an amazing picture of the eiffel tower” not “wow look at the abstract colours thrown onto the canvas, it really connotates his anger”. As we are getting more globalized however, the concept of art can be spread through more cultures as lots of different art is more accessible.

Artists can reference cultures in their artwork they’ve never experienced – I have never experienced the underclass culture, but could easily reference the impoverish situations in art.

If art was only self referential it would be vvvv.boring!

Not sure about feminist art :C

Grafitti is definately art. Although it’s not “classic culture” (like shakespear), its “pop culture” (popular culture like soaps). I don’t see how it couldn’t be classed as art, only ever heard of the arrogant “it’s vandalism and its not nice, so its not art” argument which is just stupid and holds no weight whatsoever!
